Workshop Description What is Encaustic? A bees-wax and resin medium, colored with wax bars, crayons or oil paint. The paint is heated on a griddle and painted while liquid. As it dries, there are endless options to work the surface, including sculpting, collage, inscribing, layering colors, and on and on. Surfaces may include wood, stone or other hard porous surfaces. This workshop is designed to give artists a hand-on introduction to the encaustic process. We will start with a slide show of the history of encaustic on Egyptian mummy tombs, to contemporary works utilizing techniques we will play with. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of: health and safety, what encaustic is, materials, layering, fusing, collage, inlaid lines, texture, transfer, and experimental fun! The majority of time will be spent experimenting with the paint, tools and techniques. You will come away with several finished pieces, ready to hang. Workshop Registration
$60 for teachers, $85 for non-teachers Materials are additional, $40 includes all encaustic medium, colors, wood panels. Note other encaustic workshops for the general public are priced close to $200 for registration and materials. Class size is very limited for this workshop! If the class fills up before you register, contact Liz Lauter about dates for the next Encaustic workshop. Karen will be offering a mixed level one later in the winter. Coming from a textiles background with her M.F.A. from California College of the Arts, she wanted more texture in her painting, so wax was a natural material to experiment with. She has developed a personal language and multiple techniques. After teaching drawing and painting at Redwood High School for 21 years, she is eager to share her process with artists and art educators. She is passionate about guiding students through the creative process and has written hundreds of inspiring project lessons. Her website is www.karenmeadows.com Questions?
